FinishYear Update

I haven't been very good at blogging lately. Sometimes its hard to express what I have to say. Sometimes I just don't really have anything to say. Here's a quick update on how I am doing with my 2012 goals:
1. Read through the Bible: I've really dropped the ball on this one. I need someone to get in my face about this one and really hold me accountable. Hopefully I can do better on this one and get caught up. I just did catch me up and I am on day 29. So I'm technically only 2 days behind, but I started 4 days ahead. This isn't good. I'm gonna make a mini-goal to be caught up by this time next week.

2. Start a Creative Venture to Help Others: This is still in the works. I am working with a friend to organize this and I have also started telling my friends about it. When I have more firm details I will definitely be letting you know!
3. Keep the house clean: I have been doing pretty good on this one this year. There is always more that can be done. I slack…

Merry Mary Monday: 1.30.12

I told Mary to go to her safe place while I vacuumed.... This is where she went.

The (we're not having a) Baby Post

"There it is." I said to Pop Rocks the other evening. It was just a normal night. We were on the couch with Mary watching TV and I was perusing the (insert clever adjective) Facebook.
"What?" he asked, so innocently.
"There's the weekly, 'I'm pregnant' post."
"Oh, who is it this time."
"A girl I went to high school with, you don't know her."
Not that it mattered if he knew her. It happens at least once a week in my feed. Somebody announces that they're pregnant. Sometimes with their second kid. One week there were three. different. announcements. And each time I'm so thankful that my parents don't want to be a part of Facebook. It not that I don't wish each of these parents-to-be well, its just that, well, its just that, its just that,

I'm not sure why it upsetsfrustrates befuddles me. Its just a bit overwhelming.

Like I'm so behind in my life or something. I'm super happ…

A Word For Wednesday: Today

Today, like many days, I want to tell you how I feel. How I fall more in love with God everyday. How I helped a homeless person. How I made a difference in someone's life. How I am the best Christian ever.
But I can't. I. Can. Not.
I can't because, it wouldn't be true.
Today, like everyday, I'm struggling. Trying to make it. Trying to remember to breathe. Trying to remember that I am a light. Trying to remember that it matters what I say, think, or feel. Trying to remember to fall more in love with my Savior. Trying not to keep failing so miserably.
What are you doing today?

Merry Mary Monday: 1.16.12

All tuckered out!

Sunday's Songs: 1.15.12

The more I hear this song the more I like it.
"The war's already waged for my destiny."

Its the Small Things: Happy Friday

Lindsay at Aisle to Aloha does a small thing link up each Friday. I love the idea of finding the small things that make life enjoyable and then spending time appreciating them. So here are some of mine:
My new "home-life" plan. I created a great system to keep Pop Rocks and I on track with keeping the house clean, eating in and being more in control of our lives.

I've been watching One Tree Hill from the beginning on Netflix. It is fun and funny to watch a show that started my senior year of high school. Last night, Pop Rocks caught part of it while I was watching it. He asked if the "kids" were supposed to be in high school. I'm only on season two so they are most definitely still in high school. I laughed and added that the worst part is, I was older than they were. Without checking, I'm fairly certain that all of the high school cast members are older than me.
The Beauty and the Beast is being re-released this weekend. I don't know when I will ge…

Life on Oriental Avenue

Over Christmas my brother's then-girlfriend, now fiance, called to tell me that she had played Monopoly with my mom and brother. My response, "You didn't let him be the banker did you?"

When we were kids and the two of us would play the banker always ripped me off. At least I just knew he did - lets call it youngest child syndrome. I learned a lot from Monopoly. Mostly I learned that if you held onto what you had and didn't make crazy trades or flip those property cards over you could do okay. Sure I didn't win, but at least I was humiliated.
I was thinking last night as I drove home about how playing Monopoly gave me a leg up in understanding money and property. My parents have always been pretty open about money and gave us a lot of important lessons about using it. Money as a tool, not a commodity is a big lesson.
Its funny how a family tradition can shape our worldview on really important matters. I really appreciate my parents for teaching me these imp…

A Word for Wednesday: Light

You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.  Matthew 5:14 - 16

I can admit it, most days I don't feel like much of a light. I feel dim and grungy. Like a candle trying to stay lit.

Then Jesus cried out, “Those who believe in me do not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.When they look at me, they see the one who sent me.I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness." John 12:44 - 46

Most of the time I worry that I'm not living up to what I should be for Christ. I worry that I've tarnished his reputation. But then I remember, He's the SAVIOR - my savior.

Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while long…

Finish List Update

So last week I shared with you my list of goals for Finish Year. I thought I would give you an update on how it is going.
1. Read through the Bible: So I tried this last year and did ok until someone said something to discourage me and I quit. I am not going to do that this year. But I got some further inspiration in 2011. I am using the YouVersion Bible app for a reading plan. If you have a smart phone and you want to spend more time (either quality or quantity). Anyway, I had started this awhile back and caught up to where I was - day 8 or 9, so not far. This effectively gives me some cushion days. I really like this plan as opposed the paper plan I used last year. The readings are everyday and therefore shorter. The paper plan had 28 days a month.

2. Start a creative venture to help others: I came up with a plan for this. I also found someone who was just as enthusiastic as I was about it. I don't want to talk about it yet, but believe me I will when the time is right. I am so…

Merry Mary Monday - 1.9.12

Mary enjoyed the holidays.

Now that they're over - its time to hibernate!

Happy Friday

Its Friday! In case you didn't yet know. Its been an interesting week.
I started back to work on Monday after being off all but two days in the two weeks prior. I have to say, having a real Christmas break was wonderful. Its definitely what I needed to recharge. Its taken me a little while to get back in the groove though.

Pop Rocks cooked dinner the other night. It was delicious sweet and spicy popcorn shrimp tacos. I made it again last night, since he had a migraine.

I got a new desk at work yesterday. Consequently, I've cleaned and reorganized my office this week. I love my new desk with all sorts of work space.
I desperately need to clean house and do laundry tomorrow. I got the Christmas decorations semi-packed up last week, but I need to finish getting them into the correct storage locations. I have some in the basement that I need to put into better containers, as well.
Anyway, I don't have a lot going on. I have an art project to work on this weekend. A girls w…

Finish Year

This year is Finish Year over on Jon Acuff's blog. If you don't know who Jon Acuff is then you definitely need to go check out his blogs. Stuff Christian's Like keeps me laughing. Back to Finish Year. This was his idea to get people to actually finish their resolutions and goals for the new year. On Tuesday he asked those participating to write down their goals and take picture of it. I wasn't going to participate until I read this blog and decided, oh hey, why not? So here's mine:

Sorry for the blurry picture... it does prove that I wrote them down. I even taped them to the front of my calendar so that I always know where they are. Here's what they say: Read through the Bible.Start a creative venture to help others.Keep the house clean.Read two books a month and blog about them.Blog at least 5 times a week. So its already January 4th and I've only really started on one of these. I love fiction, so here's my question: Do you have any suggestions for me…

A Word for Wednesday: Alien

When I was in High School I worked at a Christian summer camp for one amazing summer. I even still have my alien shirt to prove it. The back of the shirt says, "You aren't from around here, are you?" I didn't really get the concept that summer - the idea that as Christians we aren't really from this world. I get it now.
Not to long ago I heard a sermon (or read it in a book) about the signs of a mature Christian. One was that they long for heaven. I had just started to have a turn in my thinking that was causing me to long for heaven. Before I had always thought it was kind of morbid to have such a mindset as a twenty-something or younger. But if I was given the choice today, I would choose heaven. That's not to say that I'm depressed and want death or something, its just that I want to badly to be with Jesus. To spend my days in worship to my God. The song "Where I Belong" by Building 429 has become my anthem lately.
The chorus is this:
All I …
